I can't answer your question exactly. Mexico, South American Ancients?
Author (see below) Jimmy Santiago Baca states: "I consider the barrio a tribe, a Chicano tribe--" Reference in lines 8,9,10 below.

Jimmy Santiago Baca

Each night I could hear the silver whittling blade of La Llorona,
carving a small child on the muddy river bottom,
like a little angel carved into ancient church doors.
On Fridays, Jesus Christ appeared
on La Vega road, mounted on a white charger,
his black robe flapping in the moonlight
as he thrashed through the bosque brush.
*Sometimes, Wallei, the voice of the water, sang to me,
and Mectalla, who lives in the fire, flew in the air,
and Cuzal, the Reader of Rocks, * spoke with a voice
jagged as my street-fighting knuckles.

Sylk and I have at least attempted to help you identify this. Apparently Sylk got to Cara Mia's web page too. That's probably where (s)he got the Jimmy Baca quote.

I suspected a southern Mexican or Central American indigenous peoples. There is a Walleye people, I think, in the Pacific Northwest. Yes, I know, and a salmon.
