There are ways to determine if a paragraph is too long or two short. One way is to look at the ideas presented within the paragraph. Another way is to examine sentence structure.

First, a write can tell if a paragraph is too long if they find themselves talking about more than one idea within the paragraph. For example, if I am writing a paragraph about writing paragraphs, and have one paragraph designated for discussion of ideas, and one paragraph designated for sentence structure, then I need to concentrate on the idea of ideas in a single paragraph before moving on to the subject of sentence structure.

Sentence structure can determine the length of a paragraph in so far as the physical length of it. If you use complicated sentence structure, like compound-complex sentences with many clauses, then you will find that just a few sentences may take up more of your page. Shorter sentences, of course, will produce a shorter paragraph.

In either case, whether you concentrate on sentence structure of on keeping the organization of ideas in order, the most important thing in thinking of paragraph length is: did you communicate what you needed to in the paragraph.

Of course, Lori H is correct, However, in today's world, shorter is usually better.

Journalists keep their paragraphs short so the reader will not succumb to the idea of giving up as they set out to read a (seemingly) endless stream of words that form a long paragraph.

Today's readers are in a hurry, lead busy lives with multitudes of things to do. That being the case, I vote for a paragraph of no more than two or three sentences, with sub-paragraphs following, arranged according to ideas.
