This depends on what you're looking for.
The PSP has more (l33t) capabilities as mentioned above by everyone else (video, mp3, so on and so forth), but most of its games are just normal PS1&2 games ported to PSP. Also, both the PSP and its games are more expensive.
The Nintendo DS (DS Lite is more worth your money tho; better graphics, smaller, lighter) has less stuff (gaming, pictochat, online/network gaming), but it has more interesting games (games made specifically for the handheld). It can also play GBA gamepaks. The DS (& DS Lite) and its games are much less expensive.

psp sucks. its all flash and no substance.
the ds and and ds games are cheaper, funner and all around better. and, now that a 4 gig hard drive is out for ds, it has all the capabilities a psp has. and internet connection and online play is available on ds and functions better, so dont defend psp with that

I own both, and i'm no sony or nintendo fanboy.
I'd say the PSP, due to its better gameplay experience, library of games, graphics and looks. It has an internet browser too. It is more comfortable when playing as well and its less bulky. You can play downloaded games on the version 1.5.

PSP is better because it has MP3 capability, video, games, and a picture galery. DS is just a video game thingy.

PSP Fo` sure.
DS: Games, chat to anyone thats like within 50ft., online games
PSP: Games, music, pitcures,FULL movies, internet, AND they are comming with a built in camrea in PSP2. (not for a while). And you can go to aimonpsp.com when you have it and if your at a wi-fi hotspot (mcdonalds, starbucks, subway cell-phone store, home router, ect.) you can chat to your friends. They came out with a keyboard too for AIM chat. And if you have a file on your comp[uter you want to transfer you can put it to your psp and then hook it up to the other computer with no installment needed.

i personally think that the psp is better because you can play video games alone, with a one or more friends, or challenge people online. you can watch movies, listen to music, and put pictures in it. you can also do almost everything on the internet. i think if your a pretty busy guy or goes on trips alot this would be your ultimate choice. it is awsome if you want to transfer information. you can also put downloaded videos on to it.

NINTENDO DS, by far. Its controls are simple, so probably anyone could play it, and touch screen is unique, for now.
