First, right click in the dead space. Then select "Show Desktop Icons"

If that does not help, reboot.

I would assume that after 6 days you fixed the computer, but i see no best answer chosen by you. I am willing to bet none of the answers here helped you save for one, the one telling you to re-install windows. Seems thats the answer to every problem these days. Always I am reading where someone is telling someone else to re-install windows!

STOP!!! Please, re-installing windows is a LAST ditch effort and one in this case isn't needed. You have no desktop icons, or start button or taskbar??? Simple. You have shut down Windows Explorer. Not Internet Explorer, similar name, different function. Press CONTROL+ALT+DELETE to bring up TaskManager. Look in the processes tab for explorer.exe, if it is there, click it and click end task. Now click Applications tab, click the New Task button at the bottom, in the Create New Task box simply type explorer.exe and press enter. If all went well, the strat button and taskbar ought to pop right up.

If this doesn't work, there are other things you could try, all very complicated and not worth the hassle. Usually though when explorer.exe shuts off or crashes, simply restarting the computer solves the issue. If it doesn't then the registry may not be set to use explorer.exe as the default shell. I have seen this, but very rarely. Go go google and search default shell on Windows XP (or whatever OS you're running).

Good luck.

Sure. I did it before too back in Windows 98. You probably closed Explorer which IS Windows. Internet explorer and Windows explorer are different. You sounld not close down any processes unless you are sure what they are. Stick to the open programs tab first. It is an easy mistake. Don't fret about it. Everything is still there. Remember too, to save often: after each paragraph or entry. Because anything can happen. Like someone messing with the computer or the power going out. There are many things listed that are not clear what they are. If you are not sure, ask for help first. It's OK. That's how you learn stuff, right? Hope that helps. I almost missed another part. When that happens just reboot or log on again. It will be back, but whatever you were working on or playing may be gone. Just remember to save, save, save. In work and games. Later.

Do Not Panic. The files are still there, you just killed explorer.exe. Even if your dad's work files were open, you'll get them back.

Another poster got it almost right, so:

Ctrl+Alt+Del

Choose "Task Manager"

In Task Manager menu, go to File->New Task (Run)

Type "explorer.exe"

Everything will reappear.

If you can access task manager go on File->New Task(Run) and type in explorer.exe (Then press ok). You must have accidentally closed that vital task.

you know what!, you had better not go anywhere,, but to your father, let him know what happened, all is not lost hopefully, as a tech ad visor may be able to help him, or an expert in the town you live in, better to be safe than sorry with your father that is...... you never mess with a computer if you do not know exactly what to do, or you can only get deeper in trouble........let me know what happened if you choose this answer.......
