doctor the naval on the foal. make sure the foal nurses. Make sure the mare cleans - expells the afterbirth...spread it out and make sure there are no pieces missing..it should be broken obviously where the foal came out but not pieces missing. (retained placenta can make the mare deathly ill) Make sure she has enough colostrum for the foal. Many give them a bran mash after foaling.

Let her be. Just watch. Give the mare a chance to catch her breath. If the mare knows youre there you might make her nervous, she might leave soon, or you might just stress her. Make sure youre very quite. Don't approach her unless you sense she is distressed. ( I mean other than normal labor) She'll start cleaning the baby fairly quickly. Then once the baby is dry and they both have rested, the baby will start trying to get up to nurse. Unless there have been problems pointed out by your vet, you should let nature be. The mare knows what to do and so does the foal. One thing you can do is check for the afterbirth. You want to make sure she cleans out. It usually happens with 6 hours of birth, but may take a day. If you havent spotted it, (if shes in a place you could look for it like a stall) with in a day, I would call my vet to see what they say. You don't want her to get an infection.

After she has foaled, put a small amount of tincture iodine on the navel area, Be sure to give the baby a teatnus shot. If the mare doesn't pass the afterbirth soon, call a vet.

The vet!!! No seriously though, the after birth. Then her back on her feet within 30 mins to an hour. Call your vet when she starts foaling in case she has complications, plus he'll be tell you if she has retained a piece of placenta which could turn septic and ultimately fatal.

Maybe you should ask your vet. I know my Mom would always put iodine on the foals navel, where the umbilical cord comes out. I'm not sure why she did that though.
