A Brute Force attack is an automated process of trial and error used to guess a person's username, password, credit-card number or cryptographic key.

Many systems will allow the use of weak passwords or cryptographic keys, and users will often choose easy to guess passwords, possibly found in a dictionary. Given this scenario, an attacker would cycle though the dictionary word by word, generating thousands or potentially millions of incorrect guesses searching for the valid password. When a guessed password allows access to the system, the brute force attack has been successful and the attacker is able access the account.

The same trial and error technique is also applicable to guessing encryption keys. When a web site uses a weak or small key size, its possible for an attacker to guess a correct key by testing all possible keys.

Essentially there are two types of brute force attacks, (normal) brute force and reverse brute force. A normal brute force attack uses a single username against many passwords. A reverse brute force attack uses many usernames against one password. In systems with millions of user accounts, the odds of multiple users having the same password dramatically increases. While brute force techniques are highly popular and often successful, they can take hours, weeks or years to complete.

Example Username = Jon Passwords = smith, michael-jordan, [pet names], [birthdays], [car names], Usernames = Jon, Dan, Ed, Sara, Barbara, ..... Password = 12345678

It's when you try and break through a security screen by trying out every single possible solution you can think of. So if I were to try and brute force someone's PIN code, I'd try:

0001
0002
0003
... etc ...
9997
9998
9999

Until I found the one that worked. Similarly you can use brute force to decrypt something by just trying every single decryption key that exists until you find something that works.

Generally it's a bad idea to try since it will either be impossible (since there may be trillions of possible combinations that you need to try) or the system will be set up in such a way to block the attack (for example, an ATM machine would eat the bank card after I entered 3 wrong PIN numbers)

Technique? There is no technique with brute force. The biggest and the strongest win. So that leaves out most of us. We have to use other techniques to defeat the brute force attacks. The weakness of brute force is once mass is in motion, it takes energy to stop it or reverse it's direction. So one who flows with the mass can control that mass. In the street never challenge the attackers strength. Always assume everyone is stronger. I played on a baseball team which played a police team. In the course of play tempers rose and both benches cleared. One of the policemen came for me. I clamped on both his wrists. No matter what he did I never challenged his strength. I was like taffy stuck to him. No matter what he did the taffy was still stuck. I continued this until the fighting stopped and they broke up our little dance. The policeman was totally helpless. He was fighting water, not brute force, and it confused him.

If your encrypting something it's best not to use a password that can be guessed.

Better off using a piece of code from another file like an mp3 or a midi file....

code like this -------> y¹¨i&‰Jì0¯OëJ^.%G,ÑZ¥ÃÁïss[_µ>ˆ{ö{JŸ!gûþP=9§0²³OÉ20ô¿m'†XDeϚm&H\LaZ5ìÎ54mó—θÉüó¦P

Just random jibberish---control characters ,symbols etc..
They make great passwords and can be easily stored on a usb dongle or a floppy.

Copy and paste :-)

Brute force that ...........

i admire solutions, and that i've got interest because of the fact i comprehend the thank you to describe because of the fact without exception i'm getting it right here. returned I have been given how do I clarify like to a pair one and that i wanted the respond. i can assert the respond is right here after your question somebody else gave me answer. Now i say oops and that i i knew the respond.

oh that's easy,... for example,...

whom ever is the biggest bully with the biggest stick or the biggest gun, will win for sure,....

unless the bully is out smarted with subtlety and finesse.
Then Brute Force is no longer a factor.

generally, it's cracking a code (encryption) by using a series of ramdom numbers to see if it 'fits'. the better the encryption, the harder (longer) this brute force takes. some better encryptions would take BILLIONS of years to crack, in theory, longer than the life of the sun..so.....
