Have at it. By law anything unclaimed for 30days it considered lost and claimable by the finder.

Legally, I can't answer. Rightfully, obviously it is not your money. You may not know who it belongs to but one thing is certain, it doesn't belong to you.
Let's see if I understand what you are asking. You found something that doesn't belong to you. You did the right thing and turned it over to the authorities, after that I don't see where its any of your concern. If someone at the store kept it looks like it was claimed.
A lot of worry about something that didn't belong to you in the first place. I'd find out if someone at the store stole it. I'd turn it over the the police next time this happens.

Ask your company's HR / accounting department. They would also be aware of any claims against it.
If they show a shortfall in petty cash, for instance, and it corresponds to the exact amount you found, you have an obligation to return it, as that was the most likely source.

Well, at my job i found $100 once, i turned it in and they gave it to me after a month, I wasnt really expecting that though. I was more concerned about being honest, i didnt really earn that money and therefore was not entitled to it. You did the right thing by turning it in, but it seems you were more worried about being rewarded for it.

I believe that it has to be turned in to a law enforcement agency, to be held for 30 days, so they can try to find the owner. I believe whomever was in charge of that money is responsible for its dissaperance.

No, legally needs you to report it to the authorities and then it takes at least half a year.

It depends on the applicable (dang! I love that word!) statute in your state. Call your local district attorneys' office. They should tell you either the answer, or refer you to someone who can.
