You wont go far wrong with gold fish as they are hardy and easy to care for. They also come in loads of different types if you were looking for something a bit different from normal gold fish
Tropical fish are not good pets for children as they do take a lot of care, even simple things like changing the water involves a testing kit.
If you are willing to help and you think your child is old enough to look after tropical fish it might be an idea to keep to hardy fish like tetras until you are confident your child can take care of them

a betta because you dont have to get a fish tank to put it in. you dont have to have a filter system and all of that for it to live. mine simply lives in a large vase with a green plant and some marbles at the bottom. theyre very easy to take care of, clean the vase every couple of months, feed it, and its VERY hard to accidently kill a beta, they live for quite a while. besides, they come in tons of beautiful colors that the child can choose from. all of that and theyre only a few dollars. i would say get it from a pet store and not wal-mart though, those arent taken care of very well. oh, and make sure if you get a betta you never put two in the same place, theyll kill each other.

Goldfish are easy to take care of, but small children sometimes find them dull. Bright colored fish are more exciting, so try guppies or betta. If you get more than 1, make sure they are same sex, or else you'll soon have about 500 fish, if you know what I mean.

Definatly a betta-chinese fighting fish, mine lasted quite a few years, until i got godfish, and put the betta in with them in a 20 gallon tank, then he died. The goldfish are the dirtiest fish you can get, bettas are SO easy to care for, not to mention how many pretty colors there are.

A betta. Theyre colorful (kids love that) and theyre extremely easy to care for. Theres all kinds of aquarium kits that are made for bettas that have everything you'd need to start it up good, and the child will be able to do it themselves. Wal-mart (if you absoluely HAVE to go there) has some, and pet stores too

yup betta or guppies, they dont require a air tube, and minimum care and food.......just keep their bowl clean, and DONT USE DETERGENT TO WASH IT..........you can put table salt on a clean paper towel and scrub it on the inside and rinse well, THEN put the fish back into it, also a good idea is to have one or two gallon jugs of water handy to use as fresh water, it will have set for a day or so and not have as much chlorine in it .........at least that is what i've heard.........

goldfish, betta or guppies, goldfish are very cheap, but depends on which kind, guppies are really colorful but need filter, air pump and a heater, goldfish and betas can live without it, but will live longer with a filter and air pump
