Hi Gazza!
Well, let us start by understanding the word 'problem'. I think this is a logical place to start, do you agree so far?
I looked up a website and found the following definition of the word:

"In general, problem is a mental obstacle which makes impossible the achieving a goal/objective/purpose."

I would slightly adjust this definition to say that a problem is a mental obstacle that makes it difficult, rather than impossible to achieve a desired aim.

Ok, so we run with this definition. What are the some problems that I and others commonly experience, as an example?

Example problems:
a) I can't make my loan payment this month. The desired aim here is to pay a debt off periodically, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I can't do it this month. It is a 'problem' for me in that I am unable to fulfill my obligations. But the definition of problem says that it is only a mental obstacle. How the heck can it be a mental obstacle when I don't have the bucks to make the payment? It seems more like a money obstacle surely?
How can I then achieve my aim? Well, I think that the most important factor in doing this is to make a periodic payment. It may not be as much as the creditor wants, but at least it is something even 1p or 1 cent would do to overcome this 'mental obstacle'.

b) I cannot find a girlfriend. Again, applying the definition term, this is just a mental obstacle to my long term goal of getting married and having kids. How is it a mental obstacle though? It seems like a practical / physical issue? Well, There is nothing physically wrong with me. I may have a few ugly features but still there is nothing physically wrong with me. If the difficulty is not physical, it must be mental / psychological.

Are you still with me Gazza? I have learned something about myself while working to a solution to your question. I can't get a babe 'due to psychological problems'. Boy does that suck.

This to me, is not just a 'mental obstacle' to achieving my aim of having kids, getting married, co-habitation and all that crap. It seems so insurmountable that I am thinking how the hell can I kick this obstacle out of the way?

You see, to remove a problem of magnitude. i.e to remove / solve a big problem, does not require the person to 'understand the nature' of the problem at all. All that need to be known is that 'this thing is affecting me and it needs to go out of my life now'.

So my problem could be solved by simply going out and interacting more. For others who have a similar problem, who already interact, the solution might be to revise their approach to conversation etc.

So what is a big problem?
I would define a big problem as some mental obstacle that stands in the way of you achieving a goal / aim, but cannot be removed by a 'casual approach to thought' but something that requires deep thought and honesty to remove the obstacle.

When defined in this way, even my current problems with getting a chick seem 'normal' and not 'big'. A big problem, I guess is only a big problem so long as you have not kicked the fucker out of your way and moved on with life.

I do have a big problem, now that I have thought about it. The chick problem i have, is a big problem - because it is STILL there. It remains an obstacle to my goal.

best wishes.

The Big Problem is an episode of Nickelodeon's animated series, The Fairly OddParents, created by Butch Hartman. It originally aired in March of 2001.
Synopsis

Timmy Turner, who is about ten years old, is really put off by how a kid has to live. In a simple move, he wishes himself into an adult. He is thrilled at first, until he sees how tough an adult's life can be, especially when his fairy godparents are taken away.
Trivia

* This was the first episode of The Fairly Oddparents to be shown as part of the TV show.
* In addition, it expresses a good number of changes in the cartoon's atmosphere. For example, the animation rose to a new level of quality (as most other show do, and it would continue as time went by and new seasons were produced). This also included a change to the design of Timmy's parents, who were given faces they didn't have in the original shorts. And, new characters were introduced in this episode, namely AJ and Chester, Timmy's human kid friends, and Francis, the school bully.

a big problem is one or a cobination of the following factors:

1) life or death situation

2) loosing a large amount of money which is not yours

3) eyeing up your bosses wife/husband and he/she catchs you

4) sleeping with your bosses wife/husband and being caught by boss.

5) running over your boss. (there is an exception to this, when it is a former boss)

6) sleeping with a member of the same sex and your husband or wife or partner of opposite sex finding out.

7) getting your girlfriend pregnant and finding out just when you plan to dump her.

8) dumping your girlfirend/boyfriend and finding out few minutes latter they have won millions in the lotto

9) you get very drunk and make a pass at a friends partner (i.e. their gf, bf, husband, wife et cetra)

10) running out of condoms or beer when you need them and the shops are closed.

if you do not satisfy any of the above you are just over reacting and everything will be fine!
