The republicans fouled it up.

Basically here is what happened: it was all set to go through then near the end the republicans tacked a couple amendments on it that they knew the democrats could never accept.

One of them was an estate tax cut for multi-millionaires. This is the tax on items that you inherit from relatives, etc... BUT this tax cut would only apply to inheritances of million dollar values or more. So, the average joe out there in the middle class once again was being screwed by the republican party while they were helping the rich only.

Once again the Democrats were looking out for the middle class even if some of them are stupid republicans that don't have a clue.

Why is it the federal governments roll to dictate how much a company pays its employees. What liberals don't get is that the roll of federal government is not to protect them from all evil. It is to negotiate trade agreements with other countries, Protect against foregien invaders and threats and make deal with issues that affect the country as a whole. If anything the minimum wage should be a state by state issue.

Congress has been filled with republicans as of the Bush Administration. Republicans are known for not wanting to help the poor or the middle class . That is why the rich get more tax breaks. It is based on dollar amount rather than percentage. In other words, lets say 10% of our salary goes to taxes. and lets say it comes out to $1000 that is a lot for u and i, but the rich pays the same amount we do, which for them is probably 1% of their net salary. They may pay more or equals to what we pay, but percentage wise we pay more than we should.

The republicans attached another soak the rich rider to the bill to try and give more sorely needed tax revenue back to the rich..the democrats are protesting this(and rightly so)......what does giving millionaires more money have to do with minimum wage?the House of Representatives passed a bill that links a $2 increase in the minimum wage to a dramatic cut of the estate tax for millionaires.

A few hours earlier, Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN) went on the House floor to brag about this ploy, which has little chance of passing the Senate. Wamp said to his opponents, “I know why you’re so mad and why you say things you don’t really mean. It’s because you have seen us really outfox you on this issue tonight.” Watch it:

Transcript: expand post »

WAMP: The other side says all the time, you run this place. You’ve got majorities in the House and Senate. And I want to remind them that we do. And if we didn’t want to do this, we wouldn’t do it. You know why we are doing it this way? Because this is the better way to do it because the small businesspeople and the family farmers need certainty in terms of this estate tax. We eliminated it but it comes back. It is an onerous tax. It’s an unfair tax. When you raise wages, it is a fixed cost in business, You have to compensate that with smart business investments through tax polcy. Our tax policy has been good for America. Our economic policy is good for America.

This minimum wage increase is a savvy way to put it all together and make this medicine for America go down smooth and keep our economy strong. Because this will force some fixed costs up in small business, and you can’t just throw it on them without some people losing their jobs, and this is a fair and responsible way to do it. I know why you’re so mad and why you say things you don’t really mean. It’s because you have seen us really outfox you on this issue tonight. That’s what we are doing today is bringing a very crafty, smart, good for America, good for the economy package and still allow the minimum wage to go up. « collapse post

To Paris With Love: Multi-Millionaire Heirs Get 183 Years of Minimum Wage Income
House conservatives passed a bill last week that combined a minimum wage hike with a dramatic cut to the estate tax (aka the Paris Hilton Tax).

By my calculations, the minimum wage hike will increase the incomes of full-time, minimum wage workers by $84 a week, or about $4,368 a year. This would bring their income up to just over $15,000 a year (assuming 40 hours per week and 52 weeks per year.)

By contrast, the heirs of multimillionaires would receive substantially more by way of benefits. Consider the heirs who stand to receive a $10 million fortune through married parents. Under the new proposed law they would receive a tax break of as much as $2.76 million (compared with the 2006 estate tax law.)

Put another way, the heirs of the $10 million estate would get a tax break worth as much as 183 years of the income of a full-time minimum wage earner.

uh, because they can. Do you even realize the impact that a minimum wage increase would have on our economy and why would you listen to Billion dollar Oprah? Anything the governemtn does isnt going to really effect her, she is just trying to keep her ratings.

Also, they went to school and became politicians. People who do minimum wage jobs, deserve minimum wage pay.

raise minimum wage will simply screw the middle class, because once minimum wage is raised, the price of everything will be raised accordingly. The middle class, which does not benefit from the raise in minimum wage will have to pay more to buy anything.

Yes, it sucks. We need to start a revolution. More people are sinking in to lower class and poverty while the ones taking our tax dollars are getting richer by the minute. I want a raise.! Anyone else out there agree?

I don't know about the minimum wage but wouldn't you vote yourself a raise and do it often if you could?
