Have you tried Fry's electronics out on Northgate Blvd.? That would be a good place to start, great deals on everything you need including a new motherboard etc. There is also a used computer place out in Rancho you might look for, check the Pennysaver. I would help out more but I moved from Orangevale to New York state and I don't have the info for those places anymore. If you want to get an idea of what Fry's has to offer go to http://outpost.com there are many in store deals that are not listed on the website. I have built and upgraded many pc's for people ther using parts from Fry's, now I have to order from the net for work I do here in Upstate New York

Hard drive, processor, 3D graphics card, CD drive... That pretty much a whole new computer and in 2000 the PC architecture was completely different than today's so you can't just throw in a new processor in your current motherboard and possibly the RAM might not even be compatible. What model is your computer? Most likely it is a Pentium 2 or 3 class and there may be some upgrades you can do to make some improvements (new hard drive, CD drive should be OK, a slightly better graphics card that is AGP 4x compatible), but you won't be able to upgrade everything you want to that of a modern PC.

Additional note: If you have a computer from 2000, then adding a GeForce 6600 is a bad idea since the card AGP 8X and your board is below AGP 3.0 standard (2002). This means it will likely fry your board since it was not designed to be backwards compatible voltagewise. Your board should be able to handle a GeForce 4 or Radeon 9700 but anything above I would check to see if the voltage matches first.

Best advice is to save up and build your own. You can put what you want in it and budget the expenses according to your needs. If you'd rather buy one prebuilt, then save up now and in a year or two you should be able to get one with Windows Vista preinstalled for $500 or so and it'll be far better than your current one.

the cheapest way to upgrade is ram. if you have a little bit more money then look into a better processor. if your into gaming... after ram you should look into a good graphics card (i suggest gforce 6600 or better). i dont know how much money you have though so i would probably have graphics be your last thing you buy unless you play a lot of games
