like how do you no that there is a vowel in front of the letter y? for example probly and attorney? Like how would you tell what was the difference.

You look at the letter before the Y. If it is a vowel, (a,e,i,o,u) then you have a word that ends in Y preceded by a vowel. There is no such word as "probly." Probably has an L before the Y. L is not a vowel.

You can't tell from the sound - e.g. 'jolly' and 'trolley' sound the same.I guess it's just a matter of learning or becoming familiar with each word - and there's always spellcheck and the dictionary!
