yes it was Clint Benedict back in the 30's that wore the first ever mask as a goalie and yes it was recorded, but Jacques Plante was the one that populurized the mask. in the first game that Benedict wore the mask he got saved a shot to the face which ripped the leather mask and he got stiches and a broken nose.

lots of people say that it was Jaques Plante, but the very first was Clint Benedict, he wore one for two games during the 30's but it wasnt recorded.

Clint Benedict in the 1930's wore a half face leather mask and broke his nose in the same game. Jaques Plante wore a mask on November 2nd, 1959 after getting nine stitches getting hit by a puck in a New York Rangers game and wore it the rest of the year. He made it popular but Clint Benedict was the first.
