Unfortunately, they can't always do so. Babies in the womb have died from strangulation, and babies born with the cord encircling the neck are often delivered by Caesarean section, so as not to strangle them during delivery.

Sometimes they don't. If babies are born with the umbilical cord wrapped around them, they can wind up oxygen-deprived or losing limbs from lack of blood. It can be a serious problem--sometimes, the umbilical cord can be moved around in utero so that the baby doesn't get tangled up, but sometimes, it kills the baby or makes a baby need amputation. (And I know this from experience--I knew a woman who had this happen in her pregnancy.) Fetuses, by the way, are not very good at maintaining the position of their own umbilical cords. And why is this in trivia? This would be better in pregnancy or health issues.

Occasionally, they do strangle on the cord.
