The collared peccary also called the javelina is 75-100cm long and weighs between 14 and 30kg.

They are gregarious omnivores feeding mainly on plant matter such as berries, shoots, tubers and bulbs but also grubs, worms and small vertebrates such as snakes and lizards.

It is found in SW USA and S America.

Peccaries belong to the Tayassuidae family. They have a snout which is comprised of a cartilaginous disk at its tip enclosing the nostrils. The disk is supported by the prenasal bone.

They have short canines that point downwards, an extremely short tail, a 3 chambered stomach and a special gland on the surface of the rump.

The Tayassuidae are closey related to the Sulidae family (pigs)

The Javelina. It is a member of the pig family, but also related to the bear. It is good sport and decent table fair.
