I would suggest, very slowly...Children get a lot of comfort from feeding as well as noureshment. Try altering your routine a little for a few days if for instence you always let him feed after you have been to the park or something, make sure that there is something else interesting for him to do at that time. Buy him a NEW big boy cup - even if he already has one, with his favourite charactor on it - and let him choose which juice, water, milk what ever to put in it. Make sure he is drinking lots so that he does not become thirsty. Give him lots of exercise and cuddles so that he feels happy, secure and hopefully tired enough to drop off to sleep before asking for a feed. If this becomes very trying for you, it may help if Dad, Nanna, friend neighbore etc could take care of him for the occassional day or even hour here and there would help (they can not feed him) and so hopfully help to get him into new habbits. Breast is best! Good on you for feeding your son till he is one ^__^

The World Health Organization recommends that babies continue to nurse at least until they are two years old, and after that as long as possible.

If you choose to wean before then, stop one breastfeeding a day for a week, then eliminate another feeding the next week and so on until he is weaned.

This method will make it easier on your son and also prevent you from becoming painfully engorged. Substitute a bottle or a cup for each missed breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor about what to feed him instead of human milk.

Why make him stop?? If he still wants to nurse allow him too. Nothing is wrong with it. I nurse my son until he was over 2 1/2 years old. He is a very healthy and happy boy. He will stop when he wants to. It is good for the both of you to nurse. Enjoy the special time you two have with each other.

You can simulate breast feeding by using a baby bottle.

Slowly make the breast less accessible, give a bottle or cup to supplement..it may be a struggle, but it will happen.
