Have any people out there that are transgender tried getting jobs? How bad has discrimination been? if Transexual did you have a harder time before the procedure or after the procedure?
Please don't make fun of these people those of you that have no idea.

yes, as long as you do not run around yelling "look at me - I am transgendered". Just stick to whatever gender you picked and I bet nobody would even notice.

The trick about job hunting is not the surgury but instead the actual point of change and that is when your idenity is legally changed and you are living as the opposite sex 100% of the time. The problem is because your past job history comes from being another name however you can often get around this by simply dealing with it and putting your male name in the question "Have you ever been known by any other name at any of your previous jobs or schools?" Many employers are rather dumb about that for some reason (go figure).

Some transgender persons will often get a openly GBLT friendly job as a great way to rebuild new referances before they seek more larger careers but this is a rare opportunity.

Just deal with it, you gotta tell some stranger now and then and it really doesn't hurt that much when you do. I would recommend you have a budget built up if you change jobs due to changing idenity, just like any other reason.

The range of answers to this question are as varied as the number of trans people out there. It can range from being very difficult to find a job, to being easy-- even keeping one's current job.

I know several transsexuals, and they were able to get or keep jobs both before and after they were living full time in the gender of their choice/necessity (opposite of their gender assigned at birth).

Something I'd like to point out, though... after the 'procedure' (I assume you mean Sex Re-assignment Surgery or SRS), there are very few jobs where one would be asked to drop their pants and show their private parts to receive a job. This should have NO bearing on 99.99%+ of the jobs out there.

In general, I suppose the more 'passable' one is, the more likely it is to get a job; as that person is treated the same as anyone else of the gender they are presenting to others (e.g. a Male-to-Female transsexual is 'passing' as a woman, and thus will be considered along w/all the other women and/or men that might apply for the job).

Unfortunately it can be difficult or impossible for some transsexuals to find employment because of Social Security issues. Some states make it impossible for transsexuals to get identification (including Soc Sec card) issues for their proper gender. This means that every time you get a new job, even if you "pass" completely, your employer is liable to be notified by the Social Security administration that there is a discrepancy in your records leading to you being "outed". Many states require proof that a transsexual has had complete gender reassignment surgery - which is medically and/or financially impossible for a lot of transsexuals. This law is beyond unfair - leading to depression, drug use, alcoholism, and suicide (along with unemployment) for affected transsexuals.

It's starting to get better. I've had no problems, while some areas it can be a problem. Tech jobs are typically more accepting, while jobs in more conservative neighborhoods are not.
