I have cable. It's expensive. It is fast, but it disconnects a lot. (I think it's the crappy model of cable modem they gave me.) I would prefer DSL because it's cheaper, but is not available in my area yet. I have heard it is slower, but not very noticeable.
I don't know what SKY is. Sorry!

ADSL is a modern Internet technology that unfortunately runs on historic copper phone lines. It's cheaper, but not as widely available. The lines you run on are no different to those of dial-up but the receiving and sending technologies are more advanced, thus creating a faster service.
Cable? Well, cable uses the television lines which are intended to carry much more intensive electrical signals - video. Because they were intended for thousands of frames per second, not for audio, cable usually has a better bandwidth but is more expensive.
Personally I would recommend ADSL but really it depends where you are, how often you'll use the Internet, what content you'll require et cetera...

ADSL uses telephone wires, most of which were never designed to carry digital signals and some are even older than me. The quality of the connection depends on how far you are from the telephone exchange. Cable uses fibre optics and coaxial cable and should work better. However, there's no competition among cable providers - you can only use the one that goes past your house, and value for money is generally not as good as for ADSL

First of all considerations, make sure your options are available in your area. xDSL generally has a limit of a mile or so from your telephone's CO (Central Office) I don't know the range of cable, but I believe it is accessable if you have cable access. Wireless broadband has a range of several miles in theory, but tends to need more line of sight access. Sky broadband via satellite would be for me your last option because it tends to be expensive for the equipment and price for speed ratio.
Speed: ADSL tends to run from 384Kbs - 6.0Mbs and Cable tends to run from 384k - 9.0Mbs, but keep in mind that depends on your area, how much cash you have and especially for cable how many people are on your network segment. I remember reading that DSL also tends to have lower latency because of it structure, which I'll explain. DSL runs on top of your phone wire and is independent of other communications and thus will have less speed fluctuations than cable, but don't quote me on shared lines. Cable runs on a shared line that everyone uses and may fluctuate as more users use cable in your area. Cable due to its shared link is also easier to capture another individual's traffic to sniff for passwords and stuff.
Price: That will vary on your location again and the package requirements. Though many have an attractive price, it is usually coupled with an additional services that need to be purchased and an introductory rate that can expire in as little as three months. This is why some people have been trying to push for naked-dsl or cable which doesn't require any additional packages just to get the access. Also be aware of the installation fees, deciding to lease or buy the modem, and contract conditions or period, you don't want to get caught with fines for early termination. Cable should, logically, be the faster and more reliable.
But I know several people who had cable, mainly NTL, and they were unimpressed and wished they had ADSL.
It depends on many things, but as mentioned earlier distance from the exchange causes ADSL to slow and drop the connection.
