Simply because this would be the first instance in the history of mankind that all the nations and peoples of this earth, regardless of their color, race, religion, would have to come together in close cooperation to defeat an outside enemy. Never happened before and it's a secret wish of most people on the earth.

And once the enemy is defeated (in all scenarios the aliens are sent back crying for their alien mommies) we will have at last achieved peace on earth.

Not everyone thinks that.

But when people do think that, it's because of old movies they have seen on TV or in the theatre.

Most modern films assume aliens are kindly and safe.

I think either assumption could be tragic, if in fact aliens exist at all.

When you assume anything you make an a** out of U and ME.

No idea, but if aliens land - I'll be the first out to greet and meet them. They would be fascinating - better technology than ours obviously and so we could learn a lot. Just, one problem. Like in ET - we would have to stop governments finding out. They are scared of anyone different - little green men and hell they would **** themselves!

i assume that Aliens want to hurt us because even we want to hurt ourselves, if Aliens were watching ... they would say ... " its Free Game! "

Since through their own history they like hurting or destroying themselves, maybe they are cosmic masochists.... so we must then respect THEIR interstellar-culture and do what pleases them..... lets Photon them to the next galaxy? Thats the reason why I think Aliens wanna hurt us and something we didnt know they might be thinking off....

They're smart enough to cross the universe, we're too dumb to provide all of our species with clean water. What makes you think they'll assume we are the most intelligent species on Earth?
My guess is that they'll see us as aggressively dominant and a threat to the ecology of an otherwise fascinating planet.

People fear the unknown.

Always have. Always will.

That goes for situations aswell.

And until we discover these 'aliens' and make sense of them, scientifically, only then there is a chance that people will stop fearing them.

I don't think everyone assumes they will hurt us. I bet about 40% of people don't believe in them, and the rest are about half n half - some think they will be friendly, some aren't sure or think they might not be.

What else is out there we don't know about?... well, I don't know!

I think they'd probably wipe us out for their own safety, we're far too violent to get along with. We have enough weapons to destroy the world several times over, and we have something called mutually assured destruction. Such an idea would probably be as foreign to them as they are to us.
