Try to stay just outside the city because you'll get a much cheaper deal. Cities like Allston or Brighton are still directly on the public transportation line, but will cut the cost of a hotel in half. Try the Holiday Inn Express. Also, search Travelocity or AAA.com if you're a member, for good deals, especially last minute deals. If you're renting a car try to stay even a little further out of the city; cities like Somerville, Waltham, Woburn are all just about a 5-20 minute drive away.

Heh... camping near MIT that's funny. There aren't any campgrounds anywhere nearby for miles.

There's a hostel on Hemenway St. in Boston. It's actually probably only a 20 minute walk from MIT I would guess. Or you can take the #1 Bus up Mass. Ave.

For a cheaper motel there's a Howard Johnson's near Fenway. Or you can always check on expedia.com or other travel websites
