And that REM in general are the greatest band/musical entity ever, with fantastically tuneful, yet deep lyrics?

I LOVE REM!!!

Gotta love SHP. It is what got me hooked on R.E.M. years and years ago. It was a very upbeat song and it also had Mike Mills in the video and it was encouraging to see a man with glasses as a star. Just helped me as pre-teen...
Best single? Probably not. Can a person really pick a greatest single of R.E.M.? Definitely not. There are too many that are great. That's why R.E.M. is a quality band.
As far as the band is concerned - Michael Stipe has flipp flopped back and forth between defending the single and it's overly happy song but also in more recent years said that he hates it.
FYI, though, Shiny Happy People was in the US Top Ten right after Losing My Religion made it to number one. As far as I know that was there last single to reach the top ten. (I'm not sure about Everybody Hurts...)

I definitely think it's a good song which takes the mick out of the cheesy crappy pop videos with their ever so happy lyrics in a clever way which is original.
But I believe the greatest single in the world is definitely New Order's Blue Monday. It is a truly brilliant song, with elements of indie, dance, electronica and pop music which have been combined to create a truly brilliant piece which inspires even now. The video is also genius, both in its clever use of animation and also its more original elements, such as the flying tennis balls (watch for the face that Beranrd Sumner pulls when he is hit on the side of the head by one of the tennis balls!) and the dog balanced on the chairs.
REM are definitly one of the better bands at the moment, but Im wouldn't go so far as to say that they are the best. The early stuff was good, but they have lost much of the purchase and chart domination they had. They are now too like all the other bands that are around. Sorry but New Order or even Depeche Mode i find are much better.

Just playing The best of REM on my CD player . I agree they are one of the best groups ever , I would say Losing my Religion was the best single , followed by Everybody Hurts & then Shiny Happy People

It's good but I wouldn't say it was REM's greatest although it's nice to hear Kate.

R u for real? How can u praise that track and the band. The band hate that track, its a total mock of the music biz.
