I have been playing a Yamaha Acoustic guitar for approximately 2 years now. I have never had a formal class on guitar and can't even read music. Here's what I suggest: Youtube has many videos to show how you can play certain songs Google guitar tabs or chords... depending on what you want and learn a song that way There are chord charts available on line to learn the basic and even complex chords Try and practice at least a little every day. A little every day will be a lot more benefitial than a lot once a week. Your fingers will hurt until they build up and get used to it. I say, practice anywhere from 15 minutes (if your really not that determined) to an hour or two a day (if you want to get ahead fast). Remember... it's all practice practice practice. The learning of the chords and tabs and how to read music isn't everything. Also how to play without muting stings accidentally is key as well as learning to switch from chord to chord fast enough so there is no interruption in playing. Practice and you'll be doing great in no time.

Learn simple genres of early rock and punk first, then branch out into more complex styles. The Beatles have good songs that you can learn that will teach you about chord progressions actually. Also learn 12 bar blues, it is the very foundation of popular music.

Buy a guitar and try these chords:
2x (times): E, E6, E7, E6, E
2x: A, A6, A7, A6, A
2x: H, H6, H7, H6, H.
This is the simplest Blues which can also be played with a Rock'nRoll rhythm. Just try and rock it!

A rock guitar would be pretty heavy. I'd suggest working out a little before picking one up.

There isn't one. unless you want to turn out like those awful bands everybody laughs or cringes at then try a short cut. Otherwise it's hard slog but well worth it. Even Steve Vai still practises for 12 hours a day. If your gunna do it do it well!

there is no easy way to really learn anything. Try practicing, learn how to read sheet music, talk to other musicians and/or get lessons from a music shop.
