most of the time by the sound by tapping on the rock

I can't give you an answer, just wanted to say I haven't heard about them since my grandma passed away about 12 years ago..she used to be into rocks and polishing them.. and the geodes or whatever, she had some that were cut open, quite unique..

A hollow geode will feel very light for its size when you pick it up and will also have a characteristic sound when tapped.

Just look for round cannon ball shaped rocks that are found in volcanic areas.

You ask them and they will tell them . You ask them by knocking on them and learning the sound they make.
there is more advanced expensive scanning technology but that is not accessible for the common folk.
