SAP is a company (SAP AG) based in Germany. It is Europe's largest software company. The company was founded as Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung (catchy, ain't it). The name was later changed to Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung ("Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing", much catchier), but has been called just SAP for short.

SAP makes suites of software known as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. SAP is the market leader in this category. Basically, these systems are modular, meaning bits and pieces for different applications can be tacked on as necessary. Their general intent is to capture and connect all of an organization's data and allow analysis and management tasks to be done more simply. I've included a wikipedia link, which also has links to more detail about some of its products.

SAP is a German company that sells business software for accounting, plant management, ordering and inventory management, etc.

SAP stands for Systems Applications and Products in Data Processing (actually for the Deutchland equivalent which has the same initials).

As a former user, it is also rumored to stand for 'submit and pray'.
