Is there a difference?

Yes, there is usually a big difference, at least there should be.

We have some people who stand around socializing all the time at work... their coworkers are generally their friends, and they waste a lot of time.

But at work, we are often absorbed and concentrating on the business, and not as likely to say funny things to one another.

Our coworkers may see us as quiet or even crabby.

Our friends hopefully see the more outgoing and friendly side of us.
