For a while I assumed that on route to turning the sheild generators off, they 'bumped' into eachother ! But am I right that they do go looking for eachother ?

Yes they looked for each other. Several reasons. Vader sensed obi wan on the death star since vader knew he was still alive he would not have stopped searching for him. So if obi wan had run and went with luke instead of facing him it would have lead vader to the rebels. Of course as it turned out there was a homing beacon on the falcon so it was a wasted effort. Also when obi wan died he became more powerful "you can't win vader, if you strike me down I will become more powerful then you can possibly imagin" It is possible that without this aditional power he could not have helped luke destroy the death star. Without his instruction to "let go" and "use the force" luke would not have destroyed the death star and that would have ended the trilogy real fast.

The force is strong with this one.

The plan was to separate. Obi won was to take out the field generator. Luke and Solo were to find and rescue the princess.
This of course would prevent then from all being captured together and oh yes keep Darth Vader from sensing Luke.

It is certain that Vader would sense Kenobi so Obi Won comes up with the idea of separating. Had Vader sensed Luke he would have most definitely figured things out. He was already curious about how strong willed Leia was when he interogated her. Luke was even stronger and that would have given everything away.

Instead Obi Won takes another way to the shuttle bay. Vader picks up his trail and follows it because he was the reason he was in that black suit to begin with. It was payback time.

They face off as if this fight has been a long time coming. Vader's anger blinds him to Luke for an instant as Obi Won dares to gain his attention. They cross light sabers for that reason. Did Obi Won plan this? The Dark side of the force clouds the future. He probably was just being cautious. But then again, he did drop his guard deliberately when he recognized that Luke and Leia were in the clear. He knew that he would not die like other jedi. He would go immediately from matter to force. that is why Vader steps on the cloths, because this is something he has never seen before. So in that sense Obi Won must have done some preparation for this moment. He told Vader that this would make him even stronger and it did. He became one in the force and in that manner in Luke.

Simply stated. I would have to agree with you that this was always in Obi Won's thoughts should he meet Vader, he would sacrifice himself for the twins.

Well, sort of.

Obi Wan had already shut off the shield generators, and was heading back to the ship. At this point, he was just trying to get away from the Death Star. He had no knowledge of Leia's presence on the ship, or of Luke's attempt to rescue her.

Meanwhile, Darth Vadar had "sensed" Obi Wan's presence (via the Force), and gone hunting for him. He (DV) told his friend GM Tarkin who he was hunting, and that he wanted some privacy to do it. Hence Obi Wan's lack of stormtrooper interference in getting back to the hanger bay.

Obi Wan may have sensed DV's presence before DV stepped out with his lightsaber, or not. The movie doesn't make that plain. What it does show is Obi Wan's realization that he CAN'T make it back to the ship, even if he does kill Darth Vader. If he doesn't make it back, and he is still alive, THE OTHERS WON'T LEAVE. Obi Wan allows Darth Vader to cut him down in Luke's sight, so they know he is dead. However, there is that "knowing look" that OW gives young Luke and Leia, just before he dies. He knows he is sacrificing himself to save his enemy's children, even though Vader is clueless.

Obi Wan wasn't looking for Vader, but once they found each other, he kept the fight going long enough to allow the kids to get away, distracting both Vader and the stormtroopers guarding the ship.

Your are right Obi Wan was the one who turned off the shield generators, it wasn't Luke like that girl said. But Vader could sense Obi Wan so that is why he found him, Obi Wan fought him so that Luke, Han, and Leia could escape the Death Star. And it was inevitable that Obi Wan became one with the force so that he could continue helping Luke on his path to becoming a Jedi.

I just want to correct what other people said. Mainly the first couple people below my answer. First of all of course Obi Wan knew that Leia was on the Death Star, he would have been able to sense her through the force. And somebody said that Luke was stronger in the force than Leia. Which is incorrect, Leia turns out to be a way more powerful Jedi than Luke. Luke actually turns to the dark side in the later episodes (after episode 6). He starts a Jedi academy where he trains new Jedi including Lea and Han's kids. Then when he finds out that the Emperor has survive (through cloning himself) he ends up turning to the dark side and Lea has to bring him back to the light. That is just a little extra info for you.

It was a diversion tactic to allow Luke Skywalker time to turn off the field-generators.
No, he knew that it was time to face Darth Vader and Vader knew that Obi-wan was aboard the Death Star. It was inevitable.

they both use the 'force' and vaders power was stronger due to his being teh one, en route back obi wan let his thoughts wander and vader 'sensed' him (obi wan had been using teh force to cloak their presence on the death star), so while obi wan was en route to the millenium falcon darth vader was also headed there

in episode 2 yoda mentions that qui gonn jinn has contacted him from beyond the grave, so he mastered how to become one with the force and obviously taught yoda as well

the fact that obi wan came back also suggests he was taught by qui gon jin how to master 'death' and so he was not scared of dying, he used his death as a distraction and became one with the force

but i dont understand how anakin comes back at the end of episode 6 (return of jedi)

Obi-wan wasn't expecting to confront Vader, but once they had been captured on the Death Star he had no choice but to confront him to allow Luke to escape with his friends. Once he had the confrontation with Vader he knew the only way to be able to continue to he Luke fulfill his destiny was to allow Vader to strike him down, then he could return through the force as he had been taught by his master Qui-Gon. Then he would be able to tell Luke where to find Yoda to finish his training
