It's called 'vanity sizing' in the industry.

You take a size 16 and put a size 12 label in it. It flatters the buyer to think shes a size 12 if she buys from that chain so goes there rather than the shop where she's a 16.

Quite simply put, you are being manipulated!

Every manufacturer works from their own "blocks" or basic patterns. Each country has different interpretations of the same size. US sizes tend to be on the generous side (they call it "vanity sizing", like if the label says size 8 you won't care that you're actually overweight for your height), while Chinese and S. European sizes tend to be smaller than you might expect. I know that here in Spain the sizes are cut much smaller than they were 20 yrs ago. Today's metric size 48, for example, is the size 40 of 20 years ago. So if you used to wear a 48, you now need a 52. Why that is, I don't know. Why do they want to depress their customers?

That irks me, too.

In my opinion, some companies want women to feel like they're smaller than they are, so they mark the size of the clothes differently.

I vary between 8 and 12 in different lines of clothing.

Because "large" is not a specific word.

Clothing sizes would be more accurate if they were tailored to specific measurements in inches. However this would make it more difficult to find the right shirt, since you'd most likely be looking for something very specific. Clothing manufacturers would be forced to make a much larger variety of sizes, and it would become more complicated.

So that you pick the brand that makes you the size you want to be!

Seriously, I can't believe the variation either but I can't explain why we don't seem to have standard fits and sizes. - {Although they may be called the same size some clothing is a lot tighter/looser than other garments which are supposedly the same size}.

The only solution is to try everything before you buy if you don't like having to return everything the day after you bought it!

Each manufacturer uses it's own model for each type of clothing item. So if you like the way a certain item fits you from a specific manufacturer, you'll find that the rest of the clothing line probably fits just as well.

Frustrating, isn't it?

i dont find it a bother i range from size 6-10 dependant on style of clothing.....i just try everything on before i buy and i dont care what label size is in it as long as it fits looks good and isnt overly expensive ill have it.....i think its cruel for those who are self conscious of their size becauser they are being manipulated...

the cheaper they are the smaller they seem to be.......i think the expensive ones make them bigger so that the woman says "OH i am only a size 8 i will buy that" when really she is a size 10
