tattoos are not on the outside layer of skin. the ink is injected below the epidermis--the part of skin that renews itself and dies, then sheds. The ink is injected into the dermis, the second layer of skin, which is more stable.

Because the ink is not on the surface, but actually deeper into the skin (that is why they use a vibrating needle and not a paint brush or a marker. Over time, usually a few years, the colours in a tattoo sometimes need to be redone / freshened up also, and sometimes the blue or black outlines need to be redone also :)

you are losing skin cells, not your whole skin. skin cells are so little so maybe if you live long enough you'll see your tattoo slowly fade.
