Pirates of the Caribbean 2. How would the jar of dirt protect Jack?

I know that Tia tells the legend of Davy Jones, that he had cut out his own heart because of love. She also explains that Davy Jones cannot set foot on land for another decade, so the dirt in the jar is the land that will protect Jack.

However, It just seems a bit daft. Davy Jones wouldn't be touching the dirt, only the jar and his pirate crew can set foot on land so how could the jar of dirt have prevented them from getting the heart? Also, how exactly would the dirt protect Jack?

Davy Jones wouldn't need to set foot on the dirt to retrieve his heart and even if Jack poured it all on the ground and stodd on it DJ's pirate crew could still kill Jack!

if jack had the dirt with him at all times, and davy jones came around, all he'd have to do is put the dirt around him and davy jones wouldnt be able to get him. Thats what they want you to think i guess, but they needed the jar of dirt for hiding the heart in, and causing lots of misunderstandings-- otherwise the story wouldnt work, lol.

B/c it is land, and Davy cannot set foot on land. Like if Jack dumped it out on his boat, then Davy couldn't come aboard.

Cause when he found the chest he was suppose to put the heart thing he found in the dirt so the hear wouldnt get messed up or something
