Many rectal thermometers convert the temperature for non-medical people. This is because the temperature in the rectum is hotter than the temperature under the tongue. You should always try to take a persons temperature in the same place so that you are comparing the same thing.
Rectal thermometers are often in a red case and have a red tip. Oral thermometers are in a blue case and have a blue tip.
Never let go of a rectal thermometer while in the rectum... otherwise you may end up in ER if your fishing expedition fails to retrieve it.

An oral thermometer measures the body's temperature from the underneath the tongue. The rectal thermometer measures the body's temperature from the colon. (Butt region). Hope I helped.

Are used in opposite ends of the body.. usually the rectal one has a longer tip on it. But either will work in both places. Just don't use it intemittantly in both places.

The Rectal is supposed to give you a more accurate reading of the person's temperature, usually used with babies, makes it a lot easier to get their temprature rather than trying to stick it in their mouth or under their arm pit...
There is also one that is placed in the ear for faster and a better reading, but you have to make sure that it is positioned right to get the right reading....

your kidding right???? One goes in your mouth and the other in the butt. Rectal is usually used for kids because the won't keep the other under their tongue and mouth shut
