I left a job off of my resume because I didn’t want to look like a job hopper.

Right now there is a new company that wants to hire me, but they want to do a background check first. They have emailed me a form that tells me to list all the companies I’ve worked for in the past 5 years and the contact information for my supervisors.

I’d like to list that job on the form because I feel like leaving it off would be lying. But, I’m afraid if I put the job on the form they will make a comparison between the form and my resume and will see that the two don’t match.

What do you think? My instinct is to come clean and put the job on the form. This company really does want to hire me. I’d hate to be fired five years from now after they find out I lied on their form. Of course, they could always refuse to hire me now because there is a job that is listed on the form that wasn’t listed on my resume.

A variance between your resume and the background check form should not be disqualifying. Sharon's answer is right--people don't necessarily put every single job on a resume. I would advise you to put the job in question on the form. They're not likely to ask about the "discrepancy," but if they do, you need to have a cogent answer at the ready.

It is common to leave jobs that have nothing to do with the job you are seeking off of resumes.

I am in my late 40's, and if I listed every job I ever had in my life, my resume would be 25 pages long. It's just not very practical to list everything I have done since I was 12 years old. And who in their right mind would even care?

Include the job on the background check form, and if they question it say you left it off for space considerations, it wasn't relevant to this position, etc.

The background check just verifies that you worked at a particular place. They don't dig up places that are not on the form or resume.

Also, job hopping is very acceptable now. Companies are not loyal to us, so we are not loyal to them. We go where the money and/or benefits are.

I job hop a lot. In 2 years I had 6 jobs. Only one is on my resume. I explain the gap by saying I was working outside of my profession.

So much for Mr Right, or rather Mr Convicted Felon with 2 Liens against him totaling over 30,000$ and an ex-wife I never knew about!! Thank God I found out the truth before it was too late. We were almost engaged!!
