Many mothers try and protect their children, male and female. They will make excuses up for them and try and deflect the blame ie: "It's the crowd their running with". Mother's love is suppose to be unconditional and this may be the reason. Another reason I believe is that a lot of mother's worry about how others may view them if their children are liars and so worry about "what other's may think".
I work with youth in conflict with the law and can tell you that there are many mothers who will cover up and make excuses for their children. But there are also a lot of mothers who have been pushed to the brink and refuse to lie for them any longer and so therefore will inform us when their children are not telling the truth about certain situations.

It's easier to cover up than admit their child is capable of doing what they were accused of.
