Many reasons, including the ones already listed... i found this interesting though-

I think infants are especially restless at night because it is at that thime that they are most active in the womb. If you think about it... when they are in the womb and you are walking around it is like swaddeling an infant and rocking them.. walking while you are pregnant literally puts them to sleep at the end... well... at night when you stop.. they wake up! That is why when you try to sleep at the end of your pregnancy they are up and kicking and movin and shakin... it is hard to get them in a routine after because for nine months it was all that they knew. Try sleeping when your baby sleeps... it will get better....

hungry
wet
scared
lonely
hot
cold
they have gas
they need to poop
they're laying in poop
they don't know where mom is
ear infection
teething
heard a weird noise
too quiet
too loud
too bright
too dark
need to be held

Get the idea?
Infants cry because they NEED something. It is NOT to be manipulative. And sometimes what they truely NEED is just to be held...it's a true NEED for a young baby. Remember that in the womb they felt/heard/smelled/tasted mom 24/7. When they are born they don't yet understand that mom and baby are separate beings and they don't know that when mom isn't right there, she still exhists.

INFANTS CRY TO COMMUNICATE.

Respond to your baby's cries and you will begin to learn what they mean.

It is a routine. That's why. They live by 'everything on it's own time' including crying at night.

once an infant's born, they no longer have the support system that they've always known. hold and comfort your baby when he/she cries, they just want to communicate to you that they need you. just be there for them, at all times, and the crying will diminish. best of luck!!

they may feel alone-they are no longer home in the womb, they may be wet, hungry. Love baby-never spank until they are old enough to communicate.
