This depends on the country and the political and religious systems. In the West and Europe churches and the state seem to function like dysfunctional siblings. In China the church (if any) and the state are the same. In Russia the mob is the current religion and the state is trying to understand what it is. In any Islamic country the political system is solely based on someones interpretation of the religion. So....it is not so much that religions and politics are not compatible but when differing systems collide like two galaxies you can just imagine , not John Lennon, but the ensuing fireworks or wars as we say here on earth.

In a democracy the answer is simple. Religion is a personal choice practiced in many ways by many people. The rule of law governing a democracy must do so in a way that doesn't disenfranchise a portion of the population it hopes to govern or this will produce dissent. For any single religion to be able to sway the democratic process in such a way as to favor a particular theological view is the remove the cornerstone of equality in a democracy. For a democratic society to be fair and inclusive it must recognize the right of all citizens to practice their own beliefs without allowing any single one to usurp another. For to do so is to cause irreparable harm the the vision of a fair and equal partnership in the destiny of the democracy. These are the seeds of civil unrest.

In politics you must learn to bend with the issues and get the people to meet in the middle.

With religion, there is no bending ,,,,most religions are not going to bend the issues,,there-foe you get the organizations like the Taliban,or rascals, like the extremes right.
Religious lead countries will abuse the people.
Extremest will always take over.
