His wife was killed b/c she was home and he wasn't. The thief / murderer had access to Ford's house b/c he had the keys, which were given to him by the evil friend / business associate.
Watch it again. It is a very good movie.

That was only at the beginning to set the stage of the plot. The law enforcement officials had thought HE was the one who'd killed his wife. Harrison's character had to prove his own innocence. HOW the guy got in really doesn't matter. THAT he'd gotten in was very relative to the story.
