I have a manager who seems real peeved all the time. He doesn't physically look pissed, but with everything he does he seems like a mad man. Almost like a serial killer, he looks like one too. Hes always stepping on my toes in every single thing i do. He never has anything nice to say about my work (when everyone else appericates) but he does this to EVERYONE. Also, he isn't my only manager....and he seems to keep tabs on my lates and absences. I had a convo with him today and he seem so angry that i go out and wake up a little late and come into work 2-3 minutes before i clock in.......and even more pissed that on my days off i sleep in till noonish. When i say pissed i dont mean he's yelling but he seems to get so aggravated through his speech. What is wrong with this man? I don't want to communicate with him, He weirds me out. But i have no choice. He's always WATCHING EVERYONE like a hawk, but he's not even a major manager here, he use to work out on the floor.......any ideas?

people who get promoted from the shopfloor tend to make the most miserable managers., because they have been there, know all the dodges and still have the t-shirts. But mostly because they have come from the shop floor and feel they need to distance themselves as far away from the "one of the lads" syndrom as possible. Remember senior management are monitoring his ablity, as much as he is monitoring yours. This attitude generally creates a lot of tension which in turn can convert into aggressive behaviour through stress.

some people and employees need watching. a good rule for work is to come in early and leave late. If you are ever late or anything, or he doesn't think you are working as hard as your should, he will watch you more and more. Of course he is keeping track of your lates and absences! He wants a reliable employee! lates+absences+sleeping till noon says lazy.
If you have the guts ask to talk to him and tell him you have noticed some tension between you. Say you want some feedback on how you are doing, and would like some ideas on how to improve-that the job is important to you. That is, if the job really is important to you-if this isn't all in your head, sounds like you are nearing being fired.

I think your manager is absolutely sucked up by the job.I mean, he is gone quite insane due to everyday stress and montonous routine of life. You can't deal with such person coz he's not gonna change just for you.People like him think they are right all the time and very bull headed type, infact very difficult to deal with.So it's not possible to convince him in any manner coz he won't listen to anyone. He really needs a big break from the job like voluntary retirement etc. I am gonna have to say, Your bad luck ! coz either he has to vanish in the thin air or you gonna have to wait until his retirement, but how long?, eh. All you need now is great amount of pateince till then. Don't worry, every dog has his day!

Need more info,

However, is he married, have children, other home issues that mean he can only let out any frustations he may have on subordinates.

Or the fact that as he used to work on the floor, what did he sacrifice to get to his present position and does he now resent those beneath him as his new position does not bring any additional benefits and has come with more work and stress.

This man is incompetent and is authoritative toward all his subordinates in an attempt to hide it. he cannot be trusted and betrays this lack by mistrusting everyone.
