In the mental competitive world we live in every one that is insecure needs to shine in some way so sometimes it is being a bad-*** attention in some cases is killing selling drugs head of a gang marring allot of times buying allot of jewelry eating to much not eating and becoming bulimic so many people are asking for love and understanding right down to purple hair . some do it in a dangerous way so do it sutler but it is all the same humans need attention they are trying to make up for what love and attention they didn't get when they were growing up.

Your assumption is that the people think they are badasses. It is more likely that they think you are the questioner is trying to be a badass, and they think they are warning them off fo trouble.
