you need to edit the document before scanning it, because jpegs are pictures.

You need to scan it as a document, not a picture file. You can get OCR software to do this. But it first must be scanned in the proper format.
Also, forget about Power Point, the best you can hope for is that the document will look like crap. Kind of like a ransom note from a kidnapper. It looks very unprofessional, and hackish.

The jpeg you are referring to is a photograph and not a text file. Some scanners come with a OCR (optical character recognition) program that will try to recognize the letters in photograph and change them to ASCII, which is a text file. Once it is in the text file, you can edit it at will.

The easiest way is to contact the person who wrote the document and get them to send you a copy as a document (text, Word, etc.).

You need Optical Character Recogniation(OCR) Software. Try this site which lists several programs which have shareware versions. I haven't tried any of them so you'll have to verify the links for yourself.

use power point, go to file/open... select your scanned document and pull it into powerpoint..

jpeg is a picture, and you cannot edit the writings in a picture.

You could right-click the file and select 'open with' to open it in your desired format (PP). OR you could go to 'properties' and uncheck it as read-only. OR i dunno.
