MTV has had a huge impact on the music industry since its inception in 1981. But, do you think that the overall quality of music has suffered or benefitted from music video? And why??

MTV was HORRIBLE for music. Its their fault all this poppy crap like Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, etc... are around today, they promote useless, talentless bands and artists, while real band and musicians are left to struggle.

MTV is a good thing for the reason that it has created a new way of "listening" to music. Wich gave a brand new breath to this declining industry, after the magistral downhill of the music in the 80's. No wonder!!!!

Unfortunatly, since then, MTV has been imposing the "choice" of music as they are mostly presenting the "new" stuff. Lots of this new stuff is done just to fill otherwise empty spaces. We, the people, don't get to choose if we it like it or not, for most.

It seem like all the classics now have a video of their own and we sometime get to see them. But most of the time, musical choice is imposed to the viewers. Imposed things are always bad.

This channel also brought us the "image" of a musician, and a whole lot of things that are not really proper to show on TV. I think mostly about those three quarters naked RAP(whatever!!!) girls that we get to see all the time. Or entirely naked if I think about the Red Hot Chilli Pepers. Lots of violence too in some clips.

For the defence of the channel, it has made possible for us to actually "see" our favorites bands, wich I find is good. It also brought the home music video and live concerts, wich I like a lot too and helped brand new bands or artist that would never have got discovered otherwise. It also brought interaction between the TV and the viewers.

I belive that the music industry has greatly suffered from the creation of this channel, and helped pushing some artists too far has they knews MTV was to speak about them. I think about the death of some people(like Cobain) or the riots caused by others.

Yes. The use of videos have led to massive amounts of money being spent on dancers rather than feeding homeless children. Money can be spent wiser. Most of the music is horrible anyways. THe sex appeal of of artists are the only reason why MTV is popular,.

MTV had quite a handful of good quality music until 2002, when the music became awful.
