Well I usually get the end seat so I have at least one arm rest. Then if I'm feeling extra cranky that day, I'll look at my neighbour, stare him down, stare at the arm rest, lick the armrest, argument over and I did not even have to say a word. I can then watch my movie in peace and comfort, if I remember to bring a blanket too.
But you asked about proper etiquette....I don't know. I guess it always works out that we all find a way to get along. There's enough space for everyone and you're usually in at least a pair so you can always snuggle with your companion right? And not worry about the people on either sides cause they're together with their dates too, I guess.

I usually wait to see if the person next to me already using the arm rest on the other side of them if they are, then its mine. Unless I am with my boyfriend one us will get both.
