After taking a hard stance on his beliefs, people are looking for an opportunity to catch him being a "hypocrite". Most people think that being a Christian is about "being good", when it is in fact about repentance and forgiveness.

It is a truth, the greater one stands in the public view, the more that person will suffer the ridicule and attack if that person becomes a pariah, as Mel Gibson has. It remains a fact, that when a person breaks the law, even begging forgiveness, that person will still be subject to the law which calls for some punishment as decreed by the Justice system which we are subject to as citizens.
An old proverb is, there is no fury like a woman scorned, and there is a similiar one, that when we discover we have been scammed, gulled, taken advantage of by some smart but deceiving individual, that person will be subject to all sorts of revulsion. We hate the persons that try to take advantage of their position of wealth or popularity and live as though the rest of us were just lackeys to these people.
When those persons who we have put great trust and hope in for leadership and become gurus, or idols, and they screw up the public opinion, which is always fickle at best, will be without mercy, no matter how apologetic that person begs.
Now, the matter of reality of the historical comes to question. No where is there any evidence that the Christian Jesus ever actually lived a historical existance. None. All the supposed real history of Christian naratives, the gospels and epistles, have no real evidence of having ever existed apart from the Christian writings. In other words, NONE of the 300 historians of that era ever made any mention of such a NOTABLE person as Jesus.
And with regard to that supposedly INCREDIBLE account of Matthew, that at the death of Jesus, a great number of Saints were raised from their graves in Jerusalem and went into the city...not one word...not a whisper was ever written down to record this event. Josephus, who wrote extensively about everyone who lived during that era, would MOST CERTAINLY have described such a stunning event...but not one word. It therefore remains for the Christians to promote such a work of fiction as the NT and the Passion which Mel Gibson portrayed, was full of contradictions and omissions, which of course, a close study of the NT reveals....there is no real harmony of the gospel narratives, they all contradict each other as works of fiction tend to reveal themselves to be. Sincerely

Who are "they"? It seems you are pointing out a certain group of people. Cause yes he does deserve punishment, not just for his comments, but because of what he was doing. Don't fool yourself into believing he is a poor man. He is rich and has little true concern for anyone but himself. He just like most other celebrates do not think they have to obey they laws of society. If that was someone in your town just some average Joe do you think that he would have apologized? No, and the only reason he did was because he realized something when he sobered up, which is you should not bite the hand that feeds you. All he is doing is trying to wash this all away so he can work again. That doesn't mean that he doesn't feel the same just that he doesn't want us not to like him.

Everybody knows that that kind of stuff wouldn't come out of someone just because he's drunk if he didn't really have it on his mind. This hating-Jewish-people thing has been a "thing" of his for a while - and it is so 1939. Nobody wants any signs of "1939" to ever, ever show up in this world again - and when they do people react now because back then nobody spoke up early enough.
When a person hates they very often get hated back. That's why "they hate Mel Gibson so much".

Why are people doing it? Simple: because not everyone treats others like they want to be treated. People are too quick to judge and point fingers and play the blame game these days and unfortunately Mel Gibson is the victim this time. Because he's a celebrity and in the public eye so much, he's automatically targeted for criticism when he does something wrong. It's sad, but that's the way it is...

For his entire career Mel Gibson has presented himself as morally superior holier than thou and just fine to cast the first stone and condemn other people. Now he is revealed as a drunken lout, a bigot, an anti semite. He was driving drunk for God's sake! He could have killed some one, he could have turned some poor innocent into a cripple for life! Anybody caught drinking and driving needs to be penalized because drinking and driving is so dangerous--it needs to be discouraged with stiff penalties. Gibson took the risk, he lost, and like anyone else, he must atone. I hope he learns some humility from this experience.

Are you kidding me?? He can't just make a movie putting down Jews and expectt people to understand the history of it. Then, he gets drunk, and says horrible things about Jews, stating he had no control over what he was saying. The guy is a freak.

You have missed the point totally. Mel is being punished because he broke the law. Drunk driving is a serious problem in this country. In society with laws, you don't just say your sorry and walk away.

Who's they? Jeez! Take a breath.
Mel is obviously beating himself up, he doesn't need to be coddled with oppinions of any one else. He has his demons and he will be the one to resolve them. If he begins to reflect on the message of Jesus, it might come to him that if he folowed the Golden Rule, do onto others as you would have them do on to you, it should turn out alright for him. As it will for all of us, irrespective of what your individual faith may be.
More than this is hype and means zip-a-rooni.
