Are Farts considered Greenhouse Gases? Should we all cut down on the spicy high fiber foods?

Just wondering if Fart Knockers are worse than smokers.

Uhmmm ,... sorry Miss Knowledge,... tried that,... My farts are just extremely negatively fragrant, but they are not of the flamable variety.

Cow flatulence
It has been estimated that 9 to 12% of the energy that a cow consumes is turned to methane that is released either through flatulence or burping (Radford, 2001). A huge number of factors affect methane emission, including diet, barn conditions and whether the cow is lactating, but an average cow in a barn produce 542 liters of methane a day, and 600 liters when out in a field (Adam, 2000).

These estimates were made using a trace gas (sulphur hexofluoride) that was released at known points within a barn containing 90 cattle. Levels of this trace gas and CO2 are then measured 30 metres downwind of the shed and thus they can estimate how much CO2 is released per cow per day. All this methane can add up to a significant amount. Australia's 140 million sheep and cattle are estimated to produce one seventh of the nation's total greenhouse gas emissions, whilst America's 100 million cattle also are major contributors (Major, 2000).

The human race would have to expand greatly before our gas would cause an atmospheric changes. It is mostly methane (which technically is a greenhouse gas) and it dissipates to join the rest of the atmosphere (mostly nitrogen, with oxygen and carbon dioxide). Most of the gases causing concern are carbon based-excess carbon dioxide, and carbon based emissions and pollution.

I had read that article about the cows before-I tell my students about it when we study digestion.

If you want to save the world, light a match up to your butt to burn off the methane before it reaches the atmosphere!

Sort of, It is methane, and herds of cows kept for dairy and meat are one of the biggest producers of methane gas on the earth! Or, so I was told.

ha ha. i doubt it. farting creates natural everyday gases, that all creatures do, so nature must be created to fight them or equalize with these, perhaps farting actually helps the o-zone layer... but I'm sure it doesn't damage it, its the gases of modern day pollution that causes all our problems.
