Protostomes have indeterminate cleavage, have a spiral cleavage pattern, the blastopore develops into the mouth, and the coelom is formed by the splitting of the mesoderm.
Deuterostomes have Determinate cleavage, have a radial cleavage pattern, the blastopore develops into the anus, and the coelom develops from pocketings of the mesoderm.

Protostomes and deuterostomes differ in adult morphology (internal vs. external skeleton)•
They also differ in development, most notably the fate of the blastopore , the opening of the cavitythat forms in the spherical embryo.•
In the protostomes, the mouth arises from the blastopore.• In the deuterostomes, the blastopore gives rise to the anus.Within the Protostomes:•
Lophotrochozoans include:Phylum Annelida (

Protostome means "first opening", proto meaning first, and stome meaning mouth (Stoma is the Greek word for mouth). The reason it is called this is because the first opening of the blastosphere becomes the mouth. Deuterostome means "second opening", meaning that the second opening of the blastosphere during embryonic development becomes the mouth, while the first becomes the anus.
