What is the history regarding the Pike rollercoaster in Long Beach?

I was having a discussion with someone, and they had mentioned a terrible accident involving the rollercoaster jumping the track ,and going into the pacific...I just couldn't believe it so now I"m searching for confirmation.

When my mom was young she used to go to the Pike to meet sailors. Isn't that cute. She ended up marrying my dad, an army Sargent. I never heard about the rollercoaster accident. I'll look around. I've lived in CA all my life (4th generation Californian, to be exact).
