This has ben puzzling my friends and i. whenever we fly out to Canada or America, in general, ppl are surprised to see that we dress like normal ppl. hello???the bob Marley era has passed, and even wen bob was alive we didnt dress like that! rastafarianism isnt even the most followed religion! it really ticks me off especially wen movies show jamaicans like that. That's not how we talk either, the jamaicans protrayed in those films hav a trinidadian or barbadian accent. Both my friends and i are tired of flying up and being asked dumb questions like:'where's ur spliff?' and 'where'd u learn to speak english?' and ppl saying to us:'yeh man, wat's jamming?' it gets on my last nerve sumtimes that ppl who hav never been to jamaica keep making the wrong assumptions.

(SORRY THIS IS SO LONG)

I didn't go to your link but I know what you mean. I have a friend from Jamaica (a real Jamaican not those people who claim it and are not) and a lot of people seem shocked that he is clean cut and wears khaki pants and polo shirts and absolutely detests anything to do with any drugs, and these people piss me off so bad it's not even funny. But then there are the ones that are even more stupid than the previous mentioned ones. The ones who come up to him and say "Oh waz up mon. Everything irie." Like it is some kind of joke. And those fake Jamaican accents make me want to jump through the roof. Then I have another friend from Trinidad and those same jacka$$e$ use the same terrible accent for both of them.

But it's the same as people who think that every black man is a gun caring, dope slinging, slang using dropout that it "going to bust a cap in your a$$" if you look at him wrong, and every black woman is a welfare recipient with no education and 3 or 4 children. Like black people can't be articulate and well spoken. And you know I don't mind these stereotypes being on TV because yes there are people like this but every black person on TV shouldn't be like this. Please give us something to counteract the stereotypes. But I guess these people are idiots that believe everything that they see on T.V. and don't care enough to see if it's true or not.

I could say a lot more but I guess I better close this because I could really go on all day about it.

it's just because that is all they know of jamaica, they have never been there, it's just like state to state. Everyone thinks that California is all like L.A. 'cause that is what they see on tv, so when I go back east people are surprised that I don't have a dark tan and I don't surf, but you can't blame them that's all they know. Same with NY, when you think of NY you think of NYC, but the truth is that there are a lot of woods and middle of nowheres in NY it's not all one big city.
Don't let it get to you, people are just narrow minded and don't take the time to think about what the rest of a place might be like. It's there problem not yours, if you feel so inclined then tell them what jamaica's really like, otherwise just let it go.

No, I have been to Jamaica several times and it is obvious that not everybody is a Rastafarian. Most Jamaicans seemed to be clean cut and against the Rastafarian culture.

That's the stereotype. I am Mexican and I get the stereo type of being a bean eating, meager job doing, siesta taking person who speaks broken English. I have a formal education and I don't like being asked stupid questions either

I don't think that. But I know what you mean because I'm from Texas and everytime I go somewhere people ask if I there are horses everywhere and they think we use them to get places. Well, it's not farm town over here and we have cars. We don't all wear cowboy hats either.

i am from st martin a island in the caribean too so i know exactly how u feel. they think they know u so well until u correct their misconception. ppl think u r uneducated and living lowly just because of where u r from. and that we hang out by the beach most of the time and have lowly jobs. how pathic that in this day and age ppl still dont know abt this world and have a general idea and refuse to change it

because people love to put other people in boxes and categorize so they can feel superior and have something to judge someone else about to take the focus off of how messed up they are....when people begin dealing with they person they are they become much nicer and less judgmental of others.
