if you just dropped it the it would sink.....if you gently lower on the top of the water surface tension will hold it over the water. earths magnetic poles will then spin the needle to point north......duh thats how they made the first compus

it will sink. a sewinjg needle is solid metal with a hole at the top for the thread. if it was hollow then it would float like a ship on the ocean.
