Most of the spring-flowering bulbs (daffodil, tulip, crocus) should be fine. Be careful not to disturb the roots of the trees when you plant the bulbs. You can also plant lilies, which will bloom in the summer and appreciate a bit of shade from the burning sun. Foxgloves, ferns, impatiens of various sorts (and there are some that are way more interesting that the common ones), jacob's ladder, campanulas, and violas will all do fine with some light shade.

It depends on what zone you live in, but anemones are beautiful flowers (bulbs) that would do well under a tree. Daylilies also do well when planted around the bottom of a tree, but you want to be sure the colors coordinate. Okay, I would want to be sure the colors coordinate because I'm that way. :) But there's a seller on eBay I just found who has lots of interesting flowers fairly cheap. If something doesn't work, rip it out and try again next year!

What zone you live in matters!

Daffodils, snapdragons, crocus, tulips in well-drained chilly weather.
