Road rage is caused by a misinterpretation of an innocent mistake as an intended affront. People make a lot of mistakes while driving which increases the likelihood for misinterpretation on the road and road rage.

because there are so many bad drivers on the road. People have enough stress as it is without haveing to worry about some idiot causing an accident. I blame this phenomenon on: seatbelt, carseats, airbags, and soft dashboards. No one is afraid to get in a wreck any more, it used to be if you got in a wreck you died or got maimed, God's way of weeding out the bad drivers. Now, anyone can drive and they don't know how so it pisses everyone off.

a lot of drivers get a "power trip" out of it. that they "own" the road. i guess some people enjoy pissing people off. some people feel it is ok to drive 10mph OVER the speed limit...not taking in consideration there is a reason why we have speed limits and some people would rather not get pulled over.
further more, i have found elderly folks tend to drive 25mph where there is a 40mph speed limit...it could be they are cruising around...joy riding. also people chatting on their cell phones tend to drive significantly under or over the speed limit (and never the actual speed limit) and tend to swerve too.
I think people do feel they're "safe" in cars, but even in a slower accident people can get seriously injured, or whiplash. and burns from airbags are horrible.

OMG - I experienced it just yesterday tryinig to get back to work from lunch. I was upset because it was hot out (I have a jeep and it had all the windows out), I was running late for a meeting and someone did something extremely inconsiderate and caused my entire lane to miss two rounds of green lights.

I honked at that person all through the 2 sets of green lights!!!!

It was the fact that they did something very inconsiderate and did not care that it affected at least 10 other cars.

Lots of people think of themselves as Supreme Commander behind the wheel of their vehicle.

Whenever something interferes with that self-perception, all the anger pent up from unresolved issues spills over and you get--ROAD RAGE!!!

Because driving is stressful, that and when you behind the wheel of a car you feel like your alot more stronger, and able, then say out on the street. its easy to get annoyed at people that leave there blinkers on, dont use blinkers ect. that and if some one slams the breaks and you bumb them, that would piss anyone off.!

same reason people shoot off their mouths on the Internet and do things they normally wouldn't do. There is an assumption of anonymity to it, so there is no fear of consequences.
