You can split open the tube of silicone towards the top and use a small tool like a tooth brush handle and "scoop" the silicone onto the handle and spread it into the area needing caulked. You can uses your finger to smooth out the caulk, after it is applied. Silicone doesn't need to be applied with a caulking gun except when you need to "inject" it into small spaces. However, you can apply it to small tight spaces with a sponge, "squeezing" it into the cracks. Good Luck

I was having the same problem. I used the "toothpaste" tubes of caulk for a week or so, then stumbled upon advice on line just when I was about to give up on the caulk gun method. I learned that the caulk gun usually has a whole in the side with a knife that will cut the tip precisely. I also learned that the caulk is often sealed at the bottom of the nozzle and most caulk guns have a pin attached to the side at the top that will penetrate the seal if poked multiple times and then the caulk flows freely. I am so grateful to learn this since I thought it was my lack of strength (also a senior and after multiple hand surgeries). Hope this helps someone else.

Lowe's sells some of the stuff (like the kind that goes around sinks and bathtubs) in containers similar to toothpaste tubes... its the same stuff just a smaller quantity.

When I read your question at first I thought it was asking how silicone substance could be applied TO a senior and I was thinking "that's probably not the best idea".

Hope this helps.

I believe it also comes in tubes and you can purchase something that squeezes the tube for you just by pushing it down but I don't know what they are called. They're something like the ones you see advertised for your toothpaste tube. Go to the hardware store, they should be able to assist you. :) Hope that helps.
