Oh Yes! Fall is the best time for planting shrubs, trees and grass seed. The warm days and cool nights provide the perfect conditions for plants to establish roots. It depends on where you live, of course, when it becomes 'too late', but ask your local garden center. Don't forget to prepare the soil and fertilize. Monitor rain/watering until the ground is frozen hard. You may also need to wrap in burlap if it is a high wind exposure. I also use Wilt-Pruf in the winter, on new plantings. It keeps plants from drying out (needles, and branches) from wind burn and extreme temperatures. You can also treat your cut Christmas tree with it to prevent needle drop in the house.

I am in zone 4-6 and yes until the end of October usually, but make sure they go into the winter with oplenty of water and mulch. If you get a dry spring start watering as early as March!

I don't know where you live, but here in GA, in zone 7, it's by far the best time. Don't forget to keep them watered.
